Automatic Classification and Visualization of UMLS Source Vocabularies through Semantic Group Profiles

چکیده
The Unified Medical Language System® (UMLS) is a comprehensive terminology integration system designed to support the development of electronic information systems. The UMLS integrates 161 source vocabularies, though for a given purpose, a developer may not need every vocabulary. With the breadth of vocabularies available, there is a need for classifying the UMLS source vocabularies with respect to their content. We describe a technique for automatic content-based classification of source vocabularies using semantic group profiles. We also present different graphical representations of the source vocabularies, in order to facilitate the comparison and selection of sources. Finally, we compare the content-based classification to a manually created usage-based classification. Our classification can be easily produced for upcoming versions of the UMLS and is being integrated as part of the UMLS documentation.

Fingerprinting Biomedical Terminologies – Automatic Classification and Visualization of Biomedical Vocabularies through UMLS Semantic Group Profiles
OBJECTIVES To explore automatic methods for the classification of biomedical vocabularies based on their content. METHODS We create semantic group profiles for each source vocabulary in the UMLS and compare the vectors using a Euclidian distance. We explore several techniques for visualizing individual semantic group profiles and the entire distance matrix, including donut pie charts, heatmap...
متن کاملNetwork Visualization of UMLS Source Vocabularies using Semantic Groups
Exploring UMLS source vocabularies can be challenging for non-specialists. In this poster, we generated network graphs to visualize the content of medical terminologies. We built a graph containing UMLS source vocabularies and semantic groups, where edges are created between a source and its significant semantic group(s). Significance was calculated using the frequency of the semantic groups in...
متن کاملConsumers’ Use of UMLS Concepts on Social Media: Diabetes-Related Textual Data Analysis in Blog and Social Q&A Sites
BACKGROUND The widely known terminology gap between health professionals and health consumers hinders effective information seeking for consumers. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to better understand consumers' usage of medical concepts by evaluating the coverage of concepts and semantic types of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) on diabetes-related postings in 2 types of social ...
متن کاملClinical application of the UMLS in a computerized order entry and decision-support system
Vanderbilt University Medical Center uses the UMLS as a dictionary, an interlingua, and a knowledge source within the WizOrder system. WizOrder provides direct care-provider order entry and integrated clinical decision-support capabilities. Linking the two functions enables efficient decision-support during the "normal" workflow of care providers, at the point where decisions are made. WizOrder...
متن کاملAn Upper-Level Ontology for the Biomedical Domain
At the US National Library of Medicine we have developed the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), whose goal it is to provide integrated access to a large number of biomedical resources by unifying the vocabularies that are used to access those resources. The UMLS currently interrelates some 60 controlled vocabularies in the biomedical domain. The UMLS coverage is quite extensive, including ...
